The Armor of God Explained (Ephesians 6)

Paul gives the Ephesian church an extended metaphor for spiritual warfare — a Roman soldier's armor, repurposed as a picture of the Christian's defense and offense. It is the most concrete catechesis on spiritual warfare in the New Testament.

The biblical foundation

So stand fast with your loins girded in truth, clothed with righteousness as a breastplate, and your feet shod in readiness for the gospel of peace. In all circumstances, hold faith as a shield, to quench all the flaming arrows of the evil one. And take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.

The 6 pieces

1. The belt of truth. Truth holds everything else together. Live in truth — with God, with yourself, with others. Lies are the enemy's currency; truth is how we resist him.
2. The breastplate of righteousness. Right standing with God (through Christ) and right living before others. Confession keeps the breastplate intact.
3. The shoes of the gospel of peace. Ready to walk, ready to bring peace. Christ's gospel goes with you wherever you go.
4. The shield of faith. Faith deflects the flaming arrows — the tempting, accusing thoughts the enemy hurls. Faith is not a feeling; it is trust in God's character.
5. The helmet of salvation. Salvation protects the mind. Knowing whose you are protects you from the enemy's confusion.
6. The sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God. The only offensive weapon in the list. Jesus modeled this in the desert — answering each temptation with scripture. Know the Word.

Wearing it, not just knowing it

Paul's point is not that you learn the list; it is that you put it on. In practice that means naming each piece out loud in morning prayer, keeping short accounts through quick repentance, staying in the Word so the sword is actually in your hand, and staying with other believers so the shield is not the only one in the line. Ephesians 6 was written to a church, not to an individual — the armor was always meant to be worn shoulder to shoulder.

Walking it out

Put the armor on daily. In the morning, walk through each piece — name it, claim it. The armor is not magic; it is the lived posture of a Christian alert to spiritual reality and dressed for the day.
