Prayer to Break a Generational Curse
Step 1 — Identify. Lord, I bring before You the specific pattern of [name the pattern: fear, addiction, divorce, depression, occult, etc.] that has been operating in my family line for generations.
Step 2 — Confess. Father, I confess the sin in my family line that opened the door to this pattern. I do not know every specific. You do. By the authority Christ has given me as Your child, I bring those sins before the Cross and ask You to wash them clean by the blood of Jesus.
Step 3 — Forgive. I forgive every person in my family line who contributed to this pattern. I release them to You. I refuse to carry their offense any longer. (Name specific people if any come to mind.)
Step 4 — Renounce. In the Name of Jesus Christ, I renounce every agreement my family line has made with the spirit of [name the pattern]. I break the chain. By the blood of Jesus, the curse is broken in this generation. I command this spirit to leave my family line, in the Name of Jesus.
Step 5 — Declare freedom. Lord Jesus, I declare freedom over my family line going forward. I declare blessing where there has been curse. I declare life where there has been death. I declare Your Name over my children, my grandchildren, and the generations to come. In Your Name, Amen.
How to pray this
This prayer often takes longer than other deliverance prayers because the steps invite you to slow down at each one. The Holy Spirit will surface specific patterns and specific people as you pray. Do not rush. If a step is hard (especially forgiveness), stay there until you can pray it with sincerity.
An important distinction
There is a real difference between inherited consequence of sin and inherited guilt for it. Scripture holds both truths: sin's consequences do travel down family lines (Exodus 20:5-6), and each person answers for their own sin, not their father's (Ezekiel 18:20). This prayer is not about taking on your ancestors' guilt. It is about closing the doorways their sin opened, so the same pattern cannot keep working in the next generation.
