Deliverance from Trauma and PTSD
Trauma is real and serious. Good pastoral care leads with trauma-informed clinical support, with deliverance prayer addressing spiritual layers that often accompany.
Trauma is serious. The right pastoral response is to honor the science of trauma — to lead with trauma-informed clinical care — and to bring deliverance prayer alongside for the spiritual layers that often accompany. Spiritual prayer never replaces clinical trauma care; it works with it.
What scripture says
He heals the brokenhearted, binds up their wounds.
— Psalm 147:3
What clinical trauma care does
Modern trauma therapy (EMDR, somatic experiencing, IFS, trauma-focused CBT, etc.) addresses the neurobiology of how trauma is stored in the body and brain. This ministry does not have an opinion on which clinical modality is best — that is a clinician's decision. We do strongly recommend that anyone with significant trauma work with a trauma-trained therapist.
What deliverance prayer addresses
- Lies that formed at the time of trauma ("it was my fault," "I am damaged," "no one is safe")
- Vows that were made ("I will never let anyone close again")
- Spiritual entry points the wound opened
- The spirit of fear or rejection that often layers on top of trauma
The both-and pattern
Work with your trauma therapist regularly. Pray deliverance prayer for the specific lies and entry points the trauma involved. Keep worship and scripture as regular grounding practices. Build community of safe people who can witness your healing.
Walking it out
Trauma healing is slow and worth it. Be patient. Trust the process. The Lord is closer to the brokenhearted than to any other group of people scripture names (Psalm 34:18).
Frequently Asked Questions
Spiritual prayer can be part of the trauma healing journey, but trauma-informed clinical care (EMDR, somatic therapy, trained trauma therapists) comes first. Deliverance prayer can address spiritual layers — agreements with lies that formed at the time of trauma, spirits that entered through the wound — alongside the clinical work.
