Signs You Need Deliverance (10 Honest Indicators)

A short, grounded list of indicators that deliverance prayer may help. None of these by itself is proof; what matters is the pattern and your honest discernment, alongside competent medical care.

If you came here looking for a clear yes or no, please read carefully: no list of signs can answer the question for you. What a list can do is help you recognize patterns you may have missed, and give you words for what you have been carrying. These ten indicators are the ones our team and most reputable deliverance ministries see most often in people who have benefited from prayer.

What scripture says about discernment

The New Testament takes for granted that Christians need to test what they are experiencing. Not every interior movement is from God; not every interior movement is from the enemy. Discernment is a normal Christian skill, learned slowly inside a praying community.

Beloved, do not trust every spirit but test the spirits to see whether they belong to God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world.

1 John 4:1

Scripture is clear that the power of Satan is real but limited. The devil cannot override your free will, cannot read your thoughts, and cannot stop God from working in you. Knowing his real but limited power matters, because both extremes — the materialist denial that the demonic exists at all, and the panicked over-attribution of every bad day to spiritual attack — are equally unhelpful.

Signs to look for

These are the ten indicators we encounter most often. Take them as a checklist for honest reflection, not as a diagnostic test.

  • Recurring intrusive thoughts that contradict who you are — blasphemy, suicide, violence, despair — that arrive unbidden and intensify during prayer.
  • A specific, repeated sin you cannot break after sincere confession, accountability, and reasonable effort over an extended period.
  • A felt aversion to worship — sudden reluctance to enter a church, open your Bible, sing, or be prayed for.
  • A pattern of relational rupture — friendships, family, and ministry relationships that collapse in cycles you cannot explain.
  • Unexplained heaviness or oppression that lifts during worship or while another believer prays over you, and returns when you leave.
  • Recurring nightmares with occult, sexual, or religious content, especially after exposure to occult media or after a specific event.
  • Physical reactions during prayer — sudden nausea, choking sensations, chest pressure, unexplained anger — that do not have a medical cause.
  • A history of occult involvement in your own life or your family line that has never been formally renounced (Ouija, séances, tarot, witchcraft, New Age rituals, Freemasonry).
  • Trauma or abuse that left vows, lies, or self-curses lodged in you — often phrased as "I will never . . ." or "I am unlovable" — that you cannot dislodge.
  • Persistent spiritual dryness that has not responded to honest counsel, confession, and a sustainable prayer rule over many months.

What this could ALSO be

Every item on the list above has a natural counterpart. Intrusive thoughts are a hallmark of obsessive-compulsive disorder. Inability to break a behavior may be addiction or trauma response, both of which respond to professional treatment. Aversion to church can be a symptom of religious trauma. Unexplained physical reactions can be panic attacks. Nightmares can be PTSD. Spiritual dryness can be a clinical depression or burnout.

None of these natural explanations cancel the spiritual dimension, and the spiritual dimension does not cancel the natural. The both-and applies here as everywhere: pursue competent medical care, and pursue spiritual care. If you are in immediate crisis or having suicidal thoughts, call or text 988 in the US.

How to discern

Sit with these five questions before you decide on a next step.

  1. How many of the ten indicators above describe me — not occasionally, but as an ongoing pattern?
  2. Have I addressed the obvious doors first — honest confession, forgiveness, worship, a daily prayer rule — or am I asking deliverance prayer to do work that ordinary obedience is designed to do?
  3. Have I had a competent medical and psychological evaluation, and have those caregivers identified anything that explains what I am experiencing?
  4. Is there a specific moment or event I can name that the pattern traces back to?
  5. Who else has prayed with me about this, and what did they discern?

What to do next

The order of operations is the same for almost every case: confession first, weekly worship, a daily prayer rule, medical evaluation where appropriate, and then — if the pattern persists — ask for prayer.

  • Confess and repent thoroughly, after real self-examination.
  • Get back into gathered worship every week, and stay there.
  • Build a simple daily prayer rule — morning prayer, ten minutes of scripture, a short review at night.
  • Renounce specific doorways you can name (see our guide on demonic doorways).
  • Get a medical and psychological evaluation if you have not already.
  • Submit a prayer request or book a deliverance session with a trusted ministry.

What deliverance ministry can and cannot do

A deliverance prayer team prays in the name of Jesus, asking the Lord to free you from oppression — harassment, bondage, lies, patterns you cannot break. We do not perform formal exorcism. We do not replace medical care, psychotherapy, your own repentance, or your local church. We pray with you, name what we discern, and walk with you for as long as you need.

What deliverance ministry can do is help you apply, in prayer, the authority Christ has already won. The cross has already done the work. Ministry is how that finished work is brought to bear on the specific places in your life where the enemy still has a foothold.

You are not weak for asking these questions. You are honest. If even a few of these indicators describe you, the next small step is to submit a prayer request or book a one-on-one session. We will pray with you.

Frequently Asked Questions

There is no magic number. What matters is whether you see a persistent pattern that does not respond to the ordinary means of grace (confession, prayer, scripture, worship) and to competent medical care. Even one indicator, if it is severe and sustained, is worth bringing to your pastor or a deliverance prayer team.
