How to Cast Out Demons Biblically (5 Steps)
A 5-step biblical pattern for casting out demons — drawn from Jesus's own example in the Gospels.
Jesus cast out demons constantly throughout the Gospels — and He sent His followers to do the same. The 5-step pattern below distills how deliverance prayer actually works, grounded in Jesus's own example.
The biblical foundation
These signs will accompany those who believe: in my name they will drive out demons.

The 5 steps
- Submit to God. Before resisting the enemy, submit to God (James 4:7). That means honest confession and repentance, which addresses sin doorways directly.
- Identify and renounce. Specifically name what is being driven out — the spirit of fear, the agreement with a lie, the occult entry point. Renounce it out loud in the Name of Jesus.
- Forgive. Unforgiveness is one of the most common open doors. Forgive every person involved in the wound or pattern. Forgiveness is an act of the will, not an emotion.
- Command in Jesus's Name. Speak directly to the spirit. Tell it to leave. Use Jesus's Name. Do not negotiate, do not engage in dialogue.
- Fill the empty space. Invite the Holy Spirit to fill what was surrendered. A house swept clean is vulnerable to seven worse spirits returning (Matthew 12:43-45) — so do not stop at "the demon left." Fill the space with the Holy Spirit, with truth, with love.
How Jesus did this
Read Mark 1:25, Mark 5:8, Mark 9:25, Luke 4:35, Luke 4:41. Jesus's pattern was direct, authoritative, and short. He did not perform. He did not negotiate. He told the spirit to leave and it left.
What this is NOT
This is not Hollywood. Genuine deliverance is rarely dramatic outwardly. Most genuine deliverance shows up as the fruit afterward — peace, freedom from the specific bondage, ease where there was struggle — not in spectacle during the prayer. Look for fruit, not theater.
Walking it out
