The Power and Authority of the Name of Jesus Over Demons

The Name of Jesus is not a magic word. The authority in His Name is the authority of who He is — God incarnate, risen, ascended, glorified. When we pray in His Name, we are not invoking a syllable; we are invoking a Person who has been given authority over every spiritual power.

What scripture says

Because of this, God greatly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bend, of those in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord.

How the authority works

The authority is in the Person, accessed through His Name. When a believer commands in Jesus's Name, the command carries the authority of Jesus Himself — not because the syllables have power, but because the speaker is invoking a real Person who has real authority.

The Sons of Sceva warning

Acts 19:13-16 tells of the seven sons of Sceva, who tried to invoke Jesus's Name as magic without belonging to Him. The spirit said "Jesus I know, and Paul I know — but who are you?" — and beat them. The lesson: the Name works through actual relationship. You cannot wield Jesus's authority without belonging to Him.

How to use the Name well

• Speak it out loud — spirits respond to spoken authority, not silent thought
• Use it in faith, not as a try-and-see magic word
• Use it from submission to Christ, not in self-will
• Pair it with scripture and with a life of ongoing repentance
• Do not negotiate with spirits — command, then move on

Walking it out

The Name of Jesus is the most-prayed word in Christian history. Use it daily. Pray the Jesus Prayer — Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner — as a constant background prayer. The more you live in His Name, the more familiar His authority becomes.
