Prayer for Deliverance from Anxiety
A deliverance prayer specifically for anxiety — grounded in Philippians 4:6-7 and paired with the pastoral cautions anxiety deserves.
Anxiety is one of the most common burdens we encounter. As with depression, it is often a real clinical condition that responds beautifully to clinical care. Where there is also a spiritual component, prayer is part of the healing.
The biblical foundation
Have no anxiety at all, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, make your requests known to God. Then the peace of God that surpasses all understanding will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.
— Philippians 4:6–7
The prayer
Prayer for Deliverance from Anxiety
Lord Jesus Christ, I come to You with this anxiety I am carrying. I cannot manage it on my own and I am tired of trying.
I confess where I have leaned on worry as if it were a substitute for trust. I confess where I have agreed with lies that came packaged as "realistic concern." I forgive anyone whose actions or words have contributed to this anxiety.
In the Name of Jesus, I renounce the spirit of anxiety, the spirit of restlessness, and the spirit of mental torment. You have no authority over me. I command you to leave me now, in the Name of Jesus Christ.
Holy Spirit, fill me with the peace that surpasses understanding. Father, guard my heart and my mind in Christ Jesus. Lord, teach me to cast my cares on You because You care for me (1 Peter 5:7).
In the Name of Jesus Christ, Amen.
How to pray this
Pray it in the moment anxiety spikes. Pray it in the morning before the day's worries begin. Pray it at night when anxiety has kept you from sleeping. Pair it with slow, intentional breathing — slow inhale, slow exhale. Anxiety is a body experience as much as a spiritual one.
Pray scripture slowly when anxiety spikes
Praying a short passage slowly and repeatedly — Psalm 23, Philippians 4:6-7, 1 Peter 5:7 — does something a rushed prayer cannot. The breath-paced rhythm settles the body while the words settle the mind on what is actually true. Pair that practice with the deliverance prayer above for a fuller approach.
If the same struggle returns
Anxiety has triggers — predictable times, situations, and thought patterns. Pray ahead of those triggers when you can.
What this prayer is NOT
Not a substitute for clinical care. Not a reason to stop medication. Not a guarantee that anxiety vanishes immediately. It is real prayer that, over time and paired with appropriate clinical care, can be part of a real path to peace.
Frequently Asked Questions
Often it is both. Clinical anxiety disorders are real medical conditions that respond to clinical care. Spiritual oppression can also manifest with symptoms that look like anxiety. We pair prayer with clinical care.
