Demonic Doorways: Examples & How to Close Them
Doorways are the entry points the enemy uses. Identifying them is half the work; closing them in the name of Jesus is the other half. Here are the doorways our team sees most often and the concrete steps that close each one.
A doorway is a foothold — an entry point the enemy uses to attach himself to your life, your home, or your family line. Doors open through what we do, what is done to us, and what our ancestors did before us. The good news is that every door can be closed. The authority of Jesus Christ, applied through repentance and through specific renunciation, shuts what we have opened.
What scripture says about doorways
Paul tells the Ephesians plainly: "do not leave room for the devil" (Ephesians 4:27). The Greek word for "room" is topos — literally a place, a foothold, a piece of ground. The image is spatial. We open territory; the enemy moves in. Closing the doorway is closing that territory.
Be angry but do not sin; do not let the sun set on your anger, and do not leave room for the devil.

Scripture is clear about the gravest doorway category. Deuteronomy 18:10-12 forbids divination, sorcery, and consulting the dead in the strongest terms available, and Galatians 5:19-20 lists sorcery among the works of the flesh. The warning is not there to frighten anyone — it is there because these practices objectively open the soul to forces that are not from God, regardless of the intention of the practitioner.
Signs to look for
The signs that a doorway is open in your life — not just historically, but actively — tend to cluster like this.
- A pattern that traces clearly back to a specific event or practice.
- A recurring temptation in the area connected to that doorway.
- Family members who struggle with the same pattern across generations.
- Intensification of the pattern during prayer, fasting, or worship.
- A felt heaviness in the room, the relationship, or the object connected to the door.
- An interior reluctance to renounce or even discuss the doorway.
- Physical or financial consequences that began after the door was opened.
- Difficulty sustaining peace, joy, or prayer in the area connected to the door.
Common doorways and how to close them
1. Occult involvement
This is the doorway scripture names most explicitly (Deuteronomy 18:10-12). It includes Ouija boards, tarot, séances, mediums, fortune-tellers, psychics, palm-readers, horoscopes used for guidance, witchcraft, Wicca, New Age rituals, energy healing rooted in non-Christian spirituality, Freemasonry, dedication to false gods, and use of occult symbols or amulets. Casual or childhood involvement still opens the door. Renunciation is not optional.
How it is closed: Confess it by name, even if it was decades ago. Renounce each practice explicitly in the name of Jesus Christ. Get rid of any associated objects — books, decks, amulets (Acts 19:19). If the involvement was significant, ask your pastor or a trusted deliverance team to pray with you specifically over each renunciation.
2. Unforgiveness
Unforgiveness is the doorway Jesus addresses most directly in the Lord's Prayer, and the one most likely to nullify the effect of any other prayer for deliverance. Refusing to forgive — even when the wound is real and the offense was grave — binds you to the person and keeps the door propped open. Forgiveness is not approval of what was done; it is release of your claim to the debt.
How it is closed: Name the person and the offense aloud, in prayer. Choose to forgive — as a decision of the will, not a feeling. Hand the debt to Jesus. Repeat the choice as often as the wound resurfaces. Confess it directly if bitterness has hardened into hatred.
3. Sexual sin
Sexual sin opens a door because sexuality involves a real spiritual bond. Pornography, unchastity, adultery, abortion, sexual abuse received or perpetrated, and same-sex activity all leave attachments that confession heals at the level of guilt but that often require further renunciation to fully close. This is not shame talking; it is the consistent witness of deliverance ministers across traditions.
How it is closed: Honest confession first. Then renounce each specific tie — by name where the memory is clear, generically where it is not. Ask the Lord to sever any soul-tie formed in those acts. Pursue accountability and, where relevant, professional treatment for compulsive patterns. Healing of sexual wounds takes time; do not rush yourself or expect a single prayer to do the work of years.
4. Generational sin and curses
Patterns repeat across family lines — addiction, divorce, premature death, occult involvement, suicide, abuse. Some of this is sociology; some of it is genetics; some of it is spiritual inheritance. As a believer, you have the authority to renounce on behalf of your family line whatever was opened before you.
How it is closed: Pray a renunciation of generational sin, naming specifically what you can name (occult involvement, secret society oaths, vows, dedications). 5. Trauma and inner vows
Trauma — abuse, abandonment, accidents, sustained fear in childhood — often leaves inner vows ("I will never need anyone again," "I am unlovable," "I will never be safe") and lies lodged in the soul. The enemy uses these as anchor points. Healing here is slow and usually requires both prayer and competent trauma-informed therapy.
How it is closed: Identify the vow or lie. Renounce it explicitly: "In the name of Jesus, I renounce the vow that I made when I said . . ." Replace the lie with the truth from scripture. Pursue trauma-informed therapy in parallel. The spiritual and the psychological work the same direction.
6. Habitual, unrepented sin
Repeated sin opens doors simply because it is repeated. The enemy does not need permission to attach where the will has already invited him. The door is not closed by willpower; it is closed by genuine repentance and the ongoing grace of God.
How it is closed: Honest confession. Weekly worship. A daily prayer rule. Accountability that has teeth. If the pattern persists despite all of these, ask for deliverance prayer specifically over the pattern.
7. Vows and oaths to non-Christian sources
Freemasonry, secret societies, fraternal oaths with religious content, dedications to false gods (whether by you or by an ancestor) — these are vows the enemy treats as binding even when they were made in ignorance. Renunciation in the name of Jesus releases them.
How it is closed: Renounce each vow explicitly by name. Renounce on behalf of family members if relevant. Ask the Lord to apply the blood of Christ to the oath and dissolve it.
What this could ALSO be
Many patterns that look like spiritual bondage have substantial natural components. Addiction is medical and behavioral. Trauma response is treatable in therapy. Compulsive behaviors have neurological correlates. None of this is a reason to skip renunciation — but it is a reason to pursue competent professional care alongside spiritual care. The doorway model and the medical model are not enemies.

Sit with these questions before you pray renunciations.
- Which of the doorways above do I know I have opened or had opened for me?
- Can I name a specific moment or pattern in my family line connected to each?
- Is there a person I have not yet forgiven, and am I willing to begin?
- Is there an object in my home connected to one of these doors that needs to go?
- Am I willing to bring all of this into the light and confess it honestly?

What deliverance ministry can and cannot do

We do not replace honest confession, which is the ordinary and most powerful way the Lord closes doors. Ministry is a support beside your own repentance, never a substitute for it.
