Deliverance from Depression

Depression is serious. The right response is to treat it pastorally and clinically — never as one OR the other. The prayer this page points to addresses the spiritual layer; clinical care addresses the medical layer; ordinary life with God sustains both.

What scripture says

The LORD is close to the brokenhearted, saves those whose spirit is crushed.

Why are you downcast, my soul; why do you groan within me? Wait for God, for I shall again praise him, my savior and my God.

An important distinction: spiritual heaviness vs clinical depression

Scripture describes a felt heaviness of soul that is distinct from clinical depression — the psalmist knew it ("Why are you downcast, my soul?" — Psalm 42:11). Both can look similar from the outside. Discernment matters.

• Spiritual heaviness often arrives suddenly, lifts with prayer, is tied to identifiable spiritual moments (after a breakthrough, before a major decision), and responds to worship, scripture, and prayer.
• Clinical depression is more persistent, has neurobiological components, responds to clinical care, and often does not lift with prayer alone.

Both can be present

A person with clinical depression may also experience spiritual desolation or oppression layered on top of it. Do not force a choice; treat both honestly. See a clinician. Pray for deliverance. Stay in worship and community. Use all the tools.

Walking it out

Stay in worship — especially on the weeks when your own prayer feels impossible and you need other people to carry it. Eat, sleep, walk in sunlight, move your body, see your clinician. Community matters. Do not isolate. The Lord is closer than you feel.
