Deliverance from Suicidal Thoughts: A Pastoral Note

This page is a pastoral note for after you have made that call — or for someone who loves a person in this place. Suicidal thoughts are a medical emergency. They also sometimes have a spiritual component. Both deserve a response.

What scripture says

If I ascend to the heavens, you are there; if I lie down in Sheol, there you are.

I came so that they might have life and have it more abundantly.

The clinical comes first

Suicidal thoughts often have neurobiological, psychiatric, and circumstantial components that respond to clinical care — therapy, medication, hospitalization where appropriate. Get that care first. Stay in that care. Spiritual prayer does not replace it.

The spiritual layer

Scripture names a "spirit of death" that is not from God (John 10:10 — the thief comes only to steal, kill, and destroy). Where there is a spiritual layer alongside the clinical, deliverance prayer can address it. Pray in the Name of Jesus against the spirit of despair, the spirit of death, the lies that tell you you are alone or beyond help. None of those lies are true.

For someone you love

If you love someone in this place: stay close. Call 988 with them if needed. Pray for them — out loud where you can. Plead the blood of Jesus over them. Reach out to their clinician if you have permission. Do not minimize what they are experiencing. Do not weaponize scripture. Be present.

Walking it out

Stay in clinical care. Stay close to God. Stay close to people who love you. The lie of suicide is that you are alone and beyond help. Both halves of that lie are false. The Lord is close. You are loved. There is real help.
