Depression is most often a real medical condition that benefits enormously from clinical care — counseling, medication, appropriate medical support. This prayer is not a substitute for any of that. But where there is also a spiritual component (which is sometimes the case), prayer is part of the healing path.

Prayer for Deliverance from Depression
Lord Jesus Christ, I bring myself to You as I am — heavy, weighted, low. You see what I am carrying.
I confess where I have agreed with the lies that have come with this depression: that I am alone, that nothing will change, that I am too much, that I am not enough. I renounce each lie in Your Name.
I forgive every person whose words or actions have contributed to this. I release them to You.
In the Name of Jesus Christ, I renounce the spirit of heaviness, the spirit of despair, and the spirit of death. You have no authority over me. I command you to leave me now and go where Jesus sends you.
Holy Spirit, fill me with Your joy, Your hope, Your peace, Your presence. Father, lift this heaviness from me. Lord Jesus, You came to set captives free — set me free.

When depression is heavy, even saying the words can feel like work. That is okay. Whisper them. Pray a single line. The Holy Spirit honors what is true, not what is performed.
Heaviness that is not the same as illness
Christians have long recognized a felt heaviness of soul that is distinct from clinical depression — the psalmist knew it well ("Why are you cast down, O my soul?" — Psalm 42:5). Naming that distinction is not a way of dismissing depression; it is a way of making sure the right help gets applied to the right thing. A trusted pastor and a good clinician are both worth having.
